| Motherwell "A - Super 11's Champions 2009 |
In the group stages, Motherwell B recorded impressive wins against Livingston A, Edinburgh Pool Federation and Edinburgh Pool Association, guaranteeing them qualification from the group stages.
Motherwell A eased past Motherwell B, both Edinburgh teams and Berwick, before falling to Livingston, a match where Motherwell had already qualified from the group in top position.
Onto the knockout stages and Motherwell B were drawn against a strong Glasgow A team who won the match 6-3, although there were chances to make matters much closer. Motherwell A went on to secure victories against Clackmannan B (6-1), Dumfries A (6-4) and Bannockburn (6-4) in the quarter finals, a result which showed the A teams strength in depth. After being 4-2 down, Motherwell had to dig deep to win the last 4 frames on the spin.
The semi finals saw Motherwell A face Livingston for the second time and this time our boys made amends for their earlier defeat with a final frame decider for a 6-5 win, thus gaining a place in the final against an Arbroath team who had impressed all weekend.
The final was a tense affair with Arbroath taking the lead and swapping frames with the Motherwell until the match was levelled at 3-3. Motherwell then went ahead for the first time, gaining a 4-3 lead. The next 2 frames were shared, then came the tournament's talking point.
With Motherwell leading 5-4 and only requiring 1 more frame for the title, John Burns managed to get onto a decent finish. With 1 easy final red and an even simpler black to finish the match, the Motherwell players on the sidelines started shouting and celebrating (a bit prematurely as it turned out). As JB was cueing the last red, Tournament Director Ross McInnes jumped down from the stage and awarded the frame to Arbroath. The justification for this unbelievable decision was that a Motherwell player shouted "Roll it in". This was taken by the TD as "coaching" and therefore the frame was forfeited.
Amid scenes of shouting and protests, Paul Mac played out the final frame decider. After chances for both players, the game, match and tournament came down to the final black. After the most impressive 3 ball tap-in you will ever see, Mini-me saw Motherwell over the finishing line. To be fair to Paul, his first pot was excellent and the pressure of carrying the entire team's hopes must have been immense, so well done Paul for keeping your head under the circumstances.
Cue the scenes of mad celebrations and much song singing, with the loudest chorus of "Roll it in, Roll it in, Roll it in" you will ever hear, a clear pop at Ross, after his earlier intervention.
All the Motherwell players (both A and B team) did themselves and MDPL proud. After the near miss at the Super 15's final in November and now with the Super 11's trophy safely back in Motherwell, it is safe to assume that our league will have gone up substantially in most people's estimations.
Congratulations to all involved, especially our captains Paul Preston and Stevie Brown on a job well done. Roll on the 15's in November ! |
