| MDPL Golf Day 2009 |
The day started with some breakfast rolls and early controversy.......Big Boab arrived late, but the panic quickly disappeared when the club brought another round of bacon rolls. Buggies were definitely required for the day, as it would have taken a huge effort to carry all the bottles/ cans round, but judging by the state of some of the guys after 18 holes, the load would definitely have been a lot lighter by the end of their round. Even the best efforts of the course marshall (who I dubbd "Blakey") were in vain. Despite repeated reminders not to drive the buggies off the paths and that alcohol was not allowed on the course, they guys all behaved impeccably (with the exception of those in the 1st 7 groups).
It was all in good fun, and I'm sure we will be able to find a different course to accommodate us next year...although I'm not sure how far we'll have to travel.
On the course, the Motherwell A captain had a shock (quite literally) when trying to retrieve a ball that had gone over an electrified fence. Twice, actually, as he then had to climb back over again once the ball was found (Homer Simpson with the beercans comes to mind). "Buzz" Preston's game was obviously affected by this as he went on to play pure pish and ended up with the booby (or should that be jobby) prize.
That said, Helen running over his foot in the buggy probably didn't help!
Drover hit a net hole in one to underline why people had been questioning handicaps, while Uddingston's Mark Baker was left rueing a missed opportunity. Yes, if he had hidden his carry-out, it wouldn't have been confiscated.....tool.
At the end of the round, it was back to the clubhouse for a meal and the prize giving. A truely hideous (yet well made) yellow/ snakeskin cuecase was generously donated by The Derby Inn's John Brownlie. The intention was to offer this as a booby prize, but such was the demand that this prize ended up going to Rab Edment for the longest drive. I think it might now be owned by Gary Parvin..... we will be looking out for it.
nearest the pin prize went to Paul Mac who managed a shot to about 8 feet and he won a bottle of vodka for his troubles (the words "Paul Mac", "vodka" and "trouble" seem to go so well together).
All the plaudits went to Riley's Teemas for a fine round and a final score of 38 points. To him, the winners trophy, a DVD player and a cut in handicap for next year (28 my erse!)
We would just like to thank everyone for coming along and making this such a great day out. We would also like to thank John Brownlie for his generous donation, Nicky Ferguson for organising the minibus and Helen for being on hand with the refreshments.
Hopefully, we will be able to organise a similar event for next year. In the meantime, photos from this years golf day are in the Photo Gallery (Link at the top) |
